The Slim Silhouette Nail

Jin Soon Choi, a manicurist famous for her collorations with MAC, recently created a new nail look that she dubbed the "Slim Silhouette" for the Prabal Gurung Spring 2012 show!  You can read more about it at ALU as well as view pictures and videos on this new nail art!

It looked easy enough so I tried my hands at this Slim Silhouette nail art and these were what I came up with! The main challange was to keep the lines as clean as possible and I'm no seasoned manicurist so I made sure to paint really slowly and on a steady surface. Choosing colours that would contrast and yet somehow complement each other was also key for this look!

I did the classic red and black combi first, with Elianto Black and China Glaze Hey Sailor, knowing that these two would go well together. It was a little too "emo" for my taste so I tried some other combinations too!

I've always loved the whole nude and black trend but I wanted to try something softer than black so I went with a dark (almost black) purple.I used OPI Bare It in Trafalgar Square and Siberian Nights for this one and I quite like how this combination turned out!

I wanted to recreate the look Jin Soon did in the video itself so I chose the closest two colours I had in my stash. I used TFS PP408 and BL604 for this one. I must say, BL604 is my favourite navy polish, even though it's only $2.90 and it's not atas like OPI Yoga-ta Have This Blue or Chanel Blue Satin. It was the first polish I bought back when I was 17 and I'm still as in love with it now as I was when I purchased it! It covers nicely in 2 coats and the formula is perfect! I also love that subtle shimmer which makes the polish more interesting than a flat navy creme.

For this last one, I wanted to go futuristic and space-age-y so I used China Glaze Millenium and my base and Awaken on top! I like how they're both so silvery and they have the best formulae ever!!! They're one coaters if you're careful enough and they dry really quick! They're also great for stamping because of how opaque they are! I have noticed however than having base coat on will make the polish somehow glide too much on the nail when polishing so sometimes I skip the base coat when I'm using these two.

I also just thought of how amazing it would be to have a baby/powder blue and Barney purple (I'm thinking along the lines of Essie Borrowed and Blue with Barry M Bright Purple) combination would look!
So what do you think? Is the Slim Silhouette something you will try? If you will, I hope this simple-to-do manicure will inspire you to come up with awesome colour combinations!

  1. It's extremely close to the Ruffian Manicure, created by CND for Ruffian in 2010. But it looks very sleek! I could never keep my hands steady to paint neat lines. I bought some french tip guides to prepare to do a Ruffian Manicure.

  2. It is similar to the Ruffian Manicure just that for this one, there's a gap between the second polish and the sides of the nails! I think this one is nicer though, cuz you can see more of the base colour! (:
