I received an awesome nail mail just the other day and it was my Nfu Ohs!!! I got #51, #61 and their aqua base and today, I'm showing you #61!
There's been rumours floating around that they made a new #61 that is less holographic than the original one and there are even pictures to prove it. Sadly, I seem to always be late to the holo party and end up getting the dud versions (that right, MPJ, Worth the Risque and Revvvolution, I'm talking about you three!) so the #61 I got was the newly formulated one.
So first, let's talk about the aqua base. I didn't notice a difference in terms of application of the holographic polishes. I still had to use 2 coats of Make Up Store Greta and 3 coats for Nfu Oh #61. The aqua base didn't really help in terms of bringing out the holographic effect more either. So really, unless it helps the polish last, I don't see why you need to buy the aqua base. At $20 a bottle, you can really spend the money on something more worthwhile. I must mention though, if you're gonna skip the aqua base, then just paint the holos in your base nails. Don't use any base coat because it will make the nail too smooth and application will be hard, with quite a few bald spots. I have heard though, that using Orly bonder as a base coat helps, so perhaps you can try "sticky" base coats.
Now, on to the main event, pictures! I have on the aqua base, 3 coats of #61 and Seche Vite on my index; aqua base, 2 coats of Greta and SV on my middle finger; no aqua base, 3 coats of #61 and no SV on my ring finger; and lastly no aqua base, 2 coats of Greta and no SV on my pinkie for all the pictures.
All the pictures above were taken indoors, under my table lamp and the holographic effect seem to be more obvious under the lamp than in the sunlight, as you can see in the next two pictures.
This last picture was taken under my table lamp, with flash.
So here's my weigh in on #61 and Greta.
Firstly, top coat seem to not really affect their holo goodness and since holos have a very bad reputation of not wearing that well without any topcoat, I'd suggest applying a top coat on top. SV did dull the holo effect just a little but I'd rather get longer wear then just a tiny tiny bit more holo, especially considering how pricey most holo polishes are.
Secondly, Greta is definitely mush much more holo than #61. That's not to say that #61 isn't holo but if I had to choose, I'd pick Greta. Now if I didn't already own Greta, I'd still be very much impressed by how holo #61 is but next to Greta, #61 just doesn't shine as much.
Thirdly, cost wise, #61 is DEFINITELY much more worthwhile to buy. I paid $20 for 17ml of #61 and $22 for 8ml of Greta. If I calculate the cost per ml, Greta actually costs more than all my polishes, including Chanel! It's actually the most expensive polish I own per ml. If cost is a concern, then I'd suggest getting #61 because it's still pretty holo and it's a linear holo, unlike the scattered holo of the dud Worth the Risque.
Forthly, the holo particles in Greta seem to be just a little bit finer than those in #61. I'm not really sure if it makes a difference in terms of holoness.
Fifth, the base colour of #61 seems more obvious. It kinda looks like Millenium (which also incidentally makes me curious what would happen if I add some spectraflair powder into Millenium, or any silver foil polish) whereas I can't really see the base colour of Greta. I'm not sure of I'm making any sense but Greta just seems more "cohesive". This means that in low lighting, #61 tends to appear more silvery than Greta would.
Lastly, with regards to wear time, SV definitely helped. I have a bad experience with Greta and the worst thing that happened once was that the polish chipped off when I was sleeping. I went to bad with nicely polished nails and when I woke up, there was this huge chip! I don't see how much more violent or rough I can be when I'm sleeping. In fact, I'm probably more tough on my nails when I'm awake. and it isn't just me. When I was with my friend at Make Up Store, my friend swatched Siw (the blue version of Greta) on her nails and by the time she got home, there was already chipping! So, the main point is, wear a topcoat!
Oh, and since we're already talking about holographic polishes, I might as well show you some swatches of China Glaze 2nite and DV8, which I by some miracle, managed to buy second hand (but totally new) from a fellow polish-aholic from Singapore. I saw someone in HK selling LOL but I resisted because I know I wouldn't really wear it. With holos, they're more trophies I keep in my helmer than something I'd wear out. DV8 is the teal one and 2nite is the cornflower one!
2 coats each under my table lamp.
This one was taken in sunlight, and that's Glamazon (my holo franken) on my index finger!
As you can see, I'm currently very much into the whole holo craze. I really really really want to buy some spectraflaire and I'm wondering if anyone's interested too? We can save on shipping because shipping's a flat rate!
You can check out how spectraflair works by clicking here, here, here and here. Let me know if you're interested!!! :D
Actually, I am! And that was supposed to be my 'surprise' gift for you >< Was going to mix 1-2 bottles for you, since I know you're crazy about holos! :p
ReplyDeleteYou know your comment just made my day! (: Where did you buy it from? And what grade is it? I'm torn between 35 (finer) and 14 (coarser but they say the rainbow effect is much brighter)!
ReplyDeleteI haven't bought it, rofl, coz I was undecided on who to buy from, and whether I wanted to share shipping with others. Haiz, this is such a botched surprise gift, hahahahaha.
ReplyDeleteIm not too sure which one I will get, but probably wouldn't matter so much for me, since I'm intending to mix in as a top coat. Wanna share shipping then? There're a number of 'suppliers' so far, with the cheapest only US$10 a gram (but unknown reliability), as well as that Aust lady at AUD$15 a gram
YESYES! I've asked around, there's a 14 micron, 20 micron and 35 micron one, the larger the micro, the larger the particles, and apparently the brighter the rainbow effect but people say there's not much difference between the 14 micron one and the 20! The AUD$15/gram one is selling 35 micron while this lady on facebook (Lori Hill, who's very reliable as she's sold SF to many people) is selling 14 micro at USD$10/gram! I *think* she may have a tiny bit of 35 micron-sized SF too.
ReplyDeleteApparently one gram of SF can make 6-8 15ml bottles so since I'm gonna mix mine into 5ml bottles, I think one gram ought to be enough! (:
Omg, I didn't come across that Facebook one! US shipping is probably cheaper too!! I'm intending to mix my into 15ml top coat bottles, but still, 1g is moreeee than enough, unless you want to franken tons of holo polishes? Let's ask around and share shipping! What's the shipping like??
ReplyDeleteAll the awesome holo-ness! I got just got 66 and it looks really amazing! If you guys are ordering SF can I please join in too? I've been following the Aussie lady's blog and her SF frankens are to die for!
ReplyDelete@cherubslips: US$5 flat rate for the 14 micron one. AUD$2.50 postage (I think) for the 35 micron one but now that I'm readin her post again (http://morenailpolish.blogspot.com/2011/09/spectraflair-for-all-and-spectraflair.html) she says she's selling onejar for AUD$15 and it looks like more than 1g? Not sure though!
ReplyDelete@colored glass: Sure you can join the order! But we're pretty busy atm so it may have to wait awhile! Plus we haven't decided which one to order! Do you have any preference?
The jar is still 1g.. she bought a weighing machine to make sure it's exactly 1g, so it's a metter of whether we prefer a bag or a jar, which I think doesn't make a difference. Besides, the price difference is quite substantial, so I rather opt for the cheaper one =)
ReplyDeleteMe too! I think I may end up buying from both eventually but I want to try one first so the cheaper one would be good for me too! (:
ReplyDeleteI don't mind waiting (: Good things are worth the wait! I don't mind either but I would definitely prefer the cheaper one.
ReplyDeleteOKAY! Settled then! I guess should come down to exchange rate too! The US lady seems to be cheaper, total S$40.70 (((10USD * 3 grams) + 5USD shipping) * 1.277 exchange rate) compared to $62.10 for the australian lady (((15AUD *3) + 2.50 shipping) * 1.307 exchange rate)! We'll be getting the finer size one in that case!
ReplyDeletePS: coloured glass, what is that flakie polish in your profile pic? Looks so nice!
It's 2010 over Caitlin! You wanted to see it so I'm doing up a post on it now (:
ReplyDeleteYay, eggcited! And in Nov/Dec, I'll hold a spree for TKB, so we can buy more 5ml bottles + ball bearings!
ReplyDeleteYESSSS! I want the holo mica from TKB too!! (: So I'll go order the SF tmr from the US person? 3g total right?
ReplyDeleteYup, the SF will come in separate baggies right??
ReplyDeleteLet me know how much I need to transfer to you, since there's also the 2 polishes from the States!
I'll ask her to pack separately! Oh, she asked me to send the money to her on paypal as "gift" so she doesn't get charged any fee but I have no such option under my Personal Payment tab! I only have Shared Expenses, Rent Charges, Payment Owed and Others! Any idea how to go about transferring the money as gift??
ReplyDeleteHmm, same. I think so long as it's a personal transaction, it's okay for her. If you topup the Paypal acct with money from your bank first, then there's only a fee of 0.5% for currency conversion.Otherwise, it's 3.9% + Fixed Fee for us to bear.
ReplyDeleteI'm using debit card leh! Will that make a difference?
ReplyDeleteI just made the transfer! I had to pay an addition fee of 1.67USD so the total payment was for 36.67USD. Using the conversion rate paypal used, it works out to be S$47.99 (rounded to the nearest cent) so each of us would have to pay approximately S$16! I'll send you my bank account details in a private message yeah? (: The lady said she'll send out our SF on Monday!!!!! :DD
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips! I bought some make-up store holos including Greta some time ago, still waiting for them to be shipped from US.
ReplyDeleteAnyway I'm very excited to find more Singaporean Nail bloggers! I blog once in a while as well, maybe we can exchange links~ my blog is http://thecherylflavour.tumblr.com
I'm already following you blog on my tumblr! Love your tumblr! My tumblr is http://the-crimson-petal.tumblr.com just that I don't post my nail swatches over there! (:
ReplyDeleteWhy did you buy Greta from the US when we have it here? Is it cheaper??
Oh! I didnt know you are the same person! hahaz.. Previously there were some offer in US so me, Chilli & Kimberly from Polish-aholics Anonymous (that fb group) got together & got some.. Actually I dont know how much it's selling here, but the 2 of them are the expert.. so I guess it should be cheaper..
ReplyDeleteAnyway I did a quick calculation.. each bottle is about $15+.. How much is it selling here?
ReplyDeleteIt's selling at $22 here so you definitely got yourself a good deal! Do let me know if you guys are ordering again!!
ReplyDeleteokie, sure~ will let you know if there are any more good deals!
ReplyDeleteThanks! (:
ReplyDeleteAnyway previously I also got 2 bottles of SF topcoat and some SF power.. If you are getting from Lori, dont have cheaper if you buy in bulk.. so you can just order yourself ba.. haha
ReplyDeleteOhhh, how is the SF top coat like? Cuz I wanna make one for myself and I want to know how much SF to roughly put inside such that it won't be too opaque and will still let the base colour show through! Anyway, the three of us (me, Cherubslips and Colouredglass) ordered together to split the shipping and paypal fee!
ReplyDeleteIs it? You ordered the powder? The last time I ordered, she don't allow us to split! Or maybe is just the SF topcoat cannot split.. The topcoat she didn't put alot of SF.. Cos when the SF settles, it's not very thick at the bottom.. Think you have to trial & error.. But the ballz very important I think.. I haven tried to franken cos Chilli helped me to order some ballz but I haven collect from her..
ReplyDeleteWe ordered 3g of SF in total so I just asked her to pack in 1g bags each! I bought the metal ball bearings a while back so it's not a problem! (:
ReplyDeleteyah.. like that think can share ba.. haha
